Chapter X – PacMan Takes Charge
Focusing on the smallest divisions of the first decade of the twenty-first century, we focus in on three great champions: Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico, Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines and Pongsaklek Wonjongkam of Thailand. By this era, professional boxing has become increasingly international and the majority of world class boxers call Japan, Thailand, Australia, Philippines, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, South Africa and the Near East home. But never has a boxer other than a few heavyweights, (Sullivan, Johnson, Dempsey, Louis, Ali and Tyson) captivated the general public quite as much as small physical statured man from the Philippines named Manny Pacquiao. People in America who have never attended a boxing match and probably don’t even know the name of the heavyweight champion of the world, have heard of “PacMan”. He was and is that famous. He gave boxing a much needed shot in the arm in the decade 2000-2010.
